Serunding Mak Jah

Salam raya to all,

Ramuannya main campak-campak, bak kata Nabil 'Lu fikirlah sendiri.' Proses sama macam masak sambal tumis ikan bilis.
Serunding Ikan Bilis Mak Jah
Bahan-bahannya
ikan bilis dikisar/blend halus, jangan guna air
cili kering dimesin/ cili boh
air asam jawa
belacan
gula ikut rasa
garam ikut rasa
bawang merah
Proses:
2. Tumis cili boh dan belacan, biar minyak banyak sikit supaya tak hangus nanti.
3. Bila naik minyak, masukkan air asam jawa, hingga masak
4. Masukkan gula, garam ikut rasa.
This is my first trial.

Oh , bagaimana sambutan raya dulu? Teringat saya, waktu tu kami kecil-kecil dibesarkan di bandar, di rumah kedai, town girl in the 50's. KIta budak-budak main bunga api terlari sana sini, ketawa gembira. Masa tu tak ada TV, tak lah hadap TV tengok siaran raya macam sekarang ni. So dengar lagu raya melalui RTM jelah! Penuh sesak panggung wayang waktu tu, rebut-rebut orang beli tiket. Satu perkara lagi ialah ambil gambar raya. It's a must.
Teringat selalu especially menjelang raya , arwah mak, bapak, makcik Embundan Noi...We miss you...Al Fatihah.

Ketuk-ketuk

macam -macam ada... tunjuk-tunjuk, hadiah dan yang best sekali, home made by my sis (hobby, kata nya)
yang ni best punya.. secret recipe MrS, kek kukus buah (betul ke nama nya?)Kukus lama tau,
tapi tahun ni cuma untuk in house sahaja ye... sorry

Aduhai, ni paling best sekali, rendang daging minang resepi arwah mak dimasak oleh cucunda tersayang MsHart. Jaga malam you, nak hasilkan menu utama raya nanti. Masak awal, masuk dalam freezer for future use in case visitors datang tak menentu.

Tulah my dear readers, ketuk-ketuk raya di rumah BC,persiapan rancak dijalankan. My sis, MrS dan MsHart sangat rajin lah dengan kemahiran tersendiri. Tak meriah raya tau, kalau dia orang tak ada. MsHartlah yang paling teruk nanti, memasak, being the chief chef. Hope you will get your long waited salary adjustment, okey. MrS pulak kemas-kemas rumah. Kemudian anak pula sepah-sepahkan. Mana tak naik darah! Sabau ye MrS. He will also get the barang-barang dapur. As for me, saya tak pandai apa-apa, bantu mana boleh... jadi kid sitter, gardener, jadi cleaner je, petugas MBMB (majlis perbandaran) kata my sis dan buat stock checking, short of item, drive ke tecso, suka tengok manusia shopping. BTW, tadi dapatlah dengar ketuk-ketuk bunyi kompang budak-budak kampung ni, kejutkan orang sahur. Rupanya dia orang round jam 3.00 pagi..patutlah kami tak dengar dan rasa hairan kenapa tak ada ketuk-ketuk seperti selalu. Kami bangun sahur jam 4.30 pagi.Dan kumpulan ketuk-ketuk tu tak singgah rumah kami sebab berpagar.
Now dah jam 4.48 am. Have to stop now. bye, bye, ketuk-ketuk raya!!!!!

Festive mood

Salam raya my dear readers,
More preparation for raya today:

House cleaning

Baking Day
Toll House Cookies

Missy, Amal and Iddin helping nek Ngah

The kids had been pestering Nek Ngah when to make cookies for Raya. So kind Nek Ngah and Missy 'helping', baked these specials, 'Biskut Kacang' and 'Toll House Cookies'. The one yang 'hangus'(burnt), littl Iddin had a share.
Finger lickin good...

Peanut Butter Cookies in the oven

When we went to Tesco to get some 'things', there was already a large crowd, of all races. Wow, the carts some of them were pushing, could'nt believe my eyes...full to the brim, yes, to the brim and we had a hard time manouvering out 'light' cart. I enjoyed the suasana hari raya with raya songs played over the air, 'shopping' touch and go, just to be in the mad-mad hari raya crowd..
Well...3 more days to Hari Raya... InsyaAllah...
Anyway, Happy holidays to all of you, selamat balik kampung, Selamat Hari Raya.

Malam 27

at last...bunga api...
lampu 7 likur

Salam Raya my dear readers, Diam tak diam malam tadi ialah malam 27 Ramadhan, orang kita kata malam 7 likur. That means Hari Raya is approaching. Ha...pada masa dulu, years ago, when I was little, bila sampai malam ni, arwah mak would dress us (i.e.my sis and me)in pretty raya dress. The style was 'skirt umbrella cut' or 'gunting payung' that when you twirled the skirt will 'open' up like the umbrella....so kembang. And together we played fire sparkles (bunga api) giggling happily, running as children would do. Last night was a night to be remembered by the kids at home. MrS so kindly bought 'lampu 7 likur' or 'lampu punjut' , bought some 'bunga api' too for the kids because maybe he did no want the kids to miss the fun kids of yesteryears enjoyed when malam 27 came. Thank you MrS. So our house was brightly lit with lampu 7 likur, the kids had fun playing the sparkles and the bloggers in- the -house had fun capturing the night to be remembered. Doesn't matter the price of kerosene has increased compared to just 40 sen per bottle those days. Once a while...closed one eye...and be happy.

time to change

decorative lights

Oh yes, my sis too bought some decorative lights to bring up the spirit of Hari Raya. That night too MrS helped to change the house curtain. Ah... 4 more days to raya....More plans ahead....

Mee Rebus

Salam ramadhan my readers,

Still 'talking' about food. I've been wanting to eat what we called in Melaka, Mee Rebus. I could'nt find Mee Rebus Melaka in Kuantan . Macam mengidam je...MrS had been on the look out for this special dish at the Pasar Ramadhan but none available. So Ms Hart suggested why not we try this Mee Rebus for berbuka.. Looks simple. Dear readers, Mee Rebus in Melaka, is Mee Kari in other states. Mind you Mee Rebus in other states is known as Mee Sup. I was confused when I was first posted in Kuantan.I ordered Mee Rebus, and they served me Mee Sup( also called Mee Celup). In Melaka, Mee Sup is Mee Sup. So what is the difference between Mee Rebus Melaka style and Mee Kari?
The gravy of course....For Mee Rebus Melaka, the gravy is sweet and spicy. It is sweet because mashed keledek plus geragau kering (dried tiny shrimps) are added to the curried gravy. But you may asked why sometimes, the gravy is watery (cair)? It's because less keledek is added, so it's you choice. I've tasted Mee Rebus Johore and Mee Rebus Singapore. They (the gravy) have the same taste, thick and sweet.
I have to go now,to Ah Meng (our friendly supplier in times of emergency) to get the keledek. Bye, Bye.

In the House

Pembaca-pembaca budiman,

Sedapnya berbuka puasa di BC... mana tidaknya. My anak saudara tu lah masak. I salute her. She is the chef . Coming home from work, she'll go straight to the kitchen, sengseng lengan baju, and ketuk-ketuk whatever, main campak-campak je bahan-bahan masak and ...ta da... dah jadi. Tak payah tengok resepi, main agak-agak je. I think her mind must be working hard planning what to cook for the buka puasa. She will cook lauk turun temurun arwah my mother, masakan orang Minang (like Gulai Nangka), or masakan orang Melaka (masam asam lah which took her trial and error to get the perfect melaka taste) or masakan dari ..nun.... Bali (Ayam Bali..popular yoh...) or dari Cina (Nasi Goreng Cina, ikan kukus) or masakan gerai like mee goreng mamak, laksa nyonya dan yang lain-lain yang sama waktu dengannya. She will cook what her children and Mr S request or 'order', yes, to win your yang di sayang's heart is through the stomach, righ? She will cook fabulous food for her friends and staff for special occassion like Hari Raya. Oh yes, you can see the table laden with dishes popular among her 'clients' or guests and sanak saudara. What more, Mr S is very good in setting up the table just like buffet table in hotels lah, complete setting I tell you. So the pulling factor is there, you see. How not to attract the 'hungry' ones. Buat air pun macam-macam rasa dan warna. One thing I forgot to mention, both of them are famous for their cake buah kukus (steam fruit cake). But for this Raya 'tutup kedai' (Apasal tak buat? asked one aunty). Yes, both of them make very good pair, one cooking, the other half decorating...kalau arwah mak masih ada, tentu tersenyum lebar, suka , 'pandai cucu-cucu den" . Mak, anak-anak mak ni pun pandai juga... tengok angah...popular for her desserts. My sister's area are making jelly (the cucu likes her jelly), pudding (famous caramel), biscuits and cakes (yang very basic and simple ones but popular among the kids), pergedel (sardin? daging?). We depend on her too for the ketupat mould. She can weave them very well!!Well, folks, I'm looking forward this Raya for the good food from air tangan the famous ones in the house..wonder what we will have this pagi raya?...Ketupat and rendang, lontong, ayam bali, sambal udang, caramel, kopi cop tupai...or for open house...just to mention... nasi himpit and rendang, imported roti jala and kari ayam, laksa nyonya, ayam bali (famous what), sambal udang, mee goreng mamak, fruit pudding, air seribu rasa...just you wait!!!!
Happy cooking to all.......

Balik Kampung

Dear readers,
Now I'm back in Melaka, my home town. to 'meriahkan lagi' bulan puasa and the forthcoming raya days with the people at home, yes the small loving family in BC.... b-a-l-i-k
k-a-m-p-u-n-g....

Simple

Salam readers.
This morning spent my time editing two of my 'movies' in the making. Already 3 done, 'burned' all 3 into 1 CD. Then comes computer problem: tak cukup memory, JY kata kena upgrade because computer's memory almost full! Then problem 'burner' (not the stove burner yah). Back to 'what to cook this for today's buka puasa'? Well,
dont't need to stress yourself. In the net you can browse to lots and lots of recipes done by bloggers.. just plain simple, senang sedia punya to the susah, payah ones. Just browse and hop to the links, and if you have the time (like me), you can read stories accompanying the recipes contributed by the klnd 'chefs'. And what more, just switch on the TV, in fact all local TV stations are showing masak-masak programmes, for berbukalah, for sahurlah, until you don't know what to choose to cook. But they give you ideas and inspiration.Kena rajin je and ada request.
As for me, for berbuka this evening, I remember making the kids back home 'cucur
kodok' or 'cengkodok', the plain ones, they like minus bawang, bilis and the like. Yes, I have the lebehan sambal sardin. So today's menu 'cengkodok cicah sambal sardin'. Then we have nasi impit too plus kuah soto. Ah, ah, the kuah soto bought from the famous soto zul because kalau masak memang sambal esok lusa tak tak habis punya.

Cengkodok + sardin= sedap juga

Selamat berbuka!

Movie maker

Salam dear readers, Beberapa hari ni alang dok belajar bagaimana buat movie from pictures taken. Cg nya, his truly la....Siapa lagi! Kalau nak kirakan senang je, just drag n drop the pictures, according to the story line, insert transition i.e. bagaimana gambar video kita nak di tayangkan like flip, rotate, roll and the like, insert video image samada nak ease in, ease out, blur and so on, masukkan muzik dan narration, title, credit...warna background, font,...macam-macam dan semuanya ada. Macam buat filem tu. Semuanya dalam program Windows Movie Maker. Kalau ada, senang bah itu. Takes time juga, nak edit lagi, nak tambah, nak kurang , nak tukar font, tukar story line, change music....sampaiah puas hati lah. Duduklah depan komputer. Mesti banyak besabar. But I enjoyed it.Tapi punyanya garang juga cg kita tu, maklumlah muridnya blur. Slow nak faham bahagian teknik-teknik ni. Sampai terpaksa muridnya kata "Pleaselah, sound macam marah je." Sekarang dah siap 5 movie, very-very short ones itu pun baru peringkat "save project as". Satisfied, then can save into CD. Patutlah buat movie ni mahal upahnya.

P.S. Buka puasa ni ada orang tu requested Masam Asam Melaka.....
Help....

Ooops

Ooops... bangun, bangun, sahur....rupanya terlajak sudah! Tak set alarm ke? Ada , tapi agak nya letih, penat, nyenyaknya tidur... tak dengar. So we hurriedly makan apa yang ada, lebihan berbuka....minum air suam banyak-banyak, makan buah kurma pun banyak-banyak, untuk dapatkan tenaga, jamah ayam goreng....makan dengan laju sebab tinggal beberapa minit saje lagi. His truly sempat makan nasi sejuk dengan ayam goreng lagi. Semua sejuk. Maaf ye JY. Kejap tu terdengar Azan Subuh....Alhamdullillah

Sikit rajin

Khamis. Puasa hari ke empat. Masih pagi lagi. Hari ni rasanya rajin lah sikit. Boring juga kalau tak ke dapur. Rasa nak masak lah. Teringat Nasi Sup Utara. What about Nasi with Sup Ayam (since I prefer ayam than meat) dengan sambal cili merah asam limau. Then buat bergedel yang mudah, sempoi (simple). Jadi macam soto pula. Kali ni nak gi jeling-jeling , intai-intai kat gerai di luar kampus UiTM Kampus Kota, just across the road round the corner, kalau-kalau ada kuih yang favourite.Hopefully this rajin spirit remains!
Bye!

Petangnya: Rajin masuk dapur but changed menu!!! Instead cooked these: Bergedel sardin, Ayam goreng kunyit-cili, Sayur Tumis Air. Can we finish these?Sampingan: Of course murtabak (from that same place) dan bubur lambuk. Not for me...The mini pasar malam outside UiTM campus sells variety of food too mainly catering for the students as well as neighboring residents. I wonder orang di Bukit China berbuka apa, maklumlah opis dah buka!!!
Ta, ta.

0n buka puasa

Nicely packed kuih, RM1 each..
Plain Fried Mee, Kwayteow, MiHun (all simple simon) in giant wok, which one tastes nice?
So sweet, sweet akok..50 sen a piece!!

Temptation, colured ice drink

Continue yesterday's story.....So off we went to Pasar Ramadhan (PR)Jalan Stadium at 3.30pm. Not much crowd. And if Pak Lah took 50 mins at PR Jalan Raja Alang, it took us 15 mins only. Not that the stalls are few but his truly only went for his choice, ya lah 'siput sedut', sorry,"jalang-jalang", "walk-walk and see-see" is not him. I went my way looking for 'Soto Zul" and in my hurry (brisk walk) missed his stall. Instead I bought tako, badak berendam as moreh after terawikh. Bought also simple Simon, plain Jane Mi Hun Bodoh . I took several snap shots and the traders must have thought 'hey reporter mana pulak ni'. That's not all. We went across to the normal food stalls, near the wet market to get his favourite 'murtabak'. Murtabak again? Not for me, 'Apam balik a.k.a apam M'kabau (introduced by the Minangkabaus) would be fine. Well, that's it. Dear readers, for breaking of fast we usually go light-light, like, murtabak for him and that apam balik for me (or that plain 'mi hun' ). After terawikh, real dinner for him but me, sorry, rice for sahur, okey. Our breaking of fast usually is so calm, no rebut-rebut, no coloured ice drink. About the lauk pauk, his choice yesterday were siput sedut (sahur cannot sedut kuat-kuat, neighbour can hear), gulai kawah (famous in Pahang, a no, no for me), jantung pisang masak putih (no kick!) and rendang limpa (okey once a while). Yours truly made sambal belacan (a must for him) and sambal kicap cili api to give the mi hun a kick! Maybe back home in Bukit China it will be a different scenario on buka puasa : good cook there, tempting food with hungry eaters too (how not to eat)with stories to share over buka puasa.

What's on the dining table that evening...Can you name the food?

Have a happy buka puasa to all!!

huuummpp

Dari pagi tadi blog hopping: singgah rumah tu, hop rumah lain pulak, layar ke London, Bangladesh, Japan, Australia, balik ke Malaysia, round-round lah..then buka pulak resepi: apa nak makan berbuka nanti? Jawapan: apa-apa je...Please be specific. Okey, Mi Hun. Basah ke kering? Senang, beli aje...semalam kata nak cari gulai siput sedut, mana lagi di Pasar Ramadhan dekat stadiumlah. Okeylah tu. Only both of us...to think of it, nak masak pun tak berbaloi, buang gas dan tenaga dan kemudian nak cuci all the utensils, huuummmppp ...penat. Petang semalam ke Pasar Ramadhan, punyalah ramai orang, drizzled pula tu, parking was a problem. So no way will he stop. Hopefully this afternoon dapatlah ke sana(nak cari siput sedut dan kuih, masa ni lah teringat epok-epok, lopis, karipap Mak Besar....) must go early, pengunjung belum ramai lagi. The weather is very clear too. Cool. BTW, kalau "bos " teringin nak makan Mi Hun hasil masakan yours truly, jom ke Tunas Manja, nak beli apa-apa yang patut. Japawan: nantilah (macam biasa), mengantuk...

Happy cooking for breaking fast!
