My car alarm system was not working. Bila tekan je remote alarm berbunyi. Beep, beep, beep!
Jadi pergilah check at one of the car accessories shops di Stadium Darul Makmur. While waiting for the young workers to set up the new alarm system in my car, an old lady came and sat next to me(See pic) She's Ah Mah, 82 yrs old, mother to the towkay of this shop. But Ah Mah is strong, knees no pain, can walk steadily, help to clear things around the shop. Only thing, she has trouble hearing. Said Amah "Biasalah orang tua. Doktor kata nak kasi boleh dengar, boleh, Buat apa buang duit RM2000.Doktor cakap tak payahlah. Lebih baik ni macam. Nanti anak-anak marah, bising-bising, cucu bising-bising, kita tak dengar. Hati senang. Kalau dapat dengar, kita susah hati, marah-marah, merajuk."
For an old Chinese lady, her Bahasa is quite good. She does'nt want to stay at the Pusat Jagaan Orang Tua "sebab makan tak sedap, nanti gadoh. "So her son brings her to the shop. Ah Mah advised "Jangan makan barang sejuk macam taugeh, kangkong , timun. Kalau sayur masak pagi makan pagi, jangan simpan sampai petang. Nasi sejuk jangan makan, nasi semalam pun jangan makan, nanti banyak angin. Kalau mahu buang angin, minum 100 Plus tapi tin punya sebab ada banyak gas." But Ah Mah likes coffee (kopi o lagi) her fav drink (banyak angin juga tu).
On relaxation Ah Mah said " Saya ada pergi Genting. Main-main sikitlah. Sikit-sikit main duit. Tak banyak. Anak bawa. Kerja saje mana boleh. Mesti makan angin suka-suka. Sana sejuk tapi saya tak rasa sejuk pun"
On her fav cucu " Saya ada cucu lelaki empat tahun, mulut sangat manis. Pandai panggil orang. Dia sayang saya. Saya pun sayang dia. Dia mahu ikut saya, tapi dia emak tak kasi.' And she imitated hoe her cucu speaks to her. Sign languange.
Ah Mah ni needs someone to talk too, a patient listener!!
Amin.
Lepas tu saya tengok budak-budak ni pasang alarm. David and company.
JY dah gi friday prayers. I susah hati, Wair-wair pasang alarm kereta terburai, boleh ke budak-budak ni buat? A yo yo.Alarm ok but not the locking system. Ambil masa lama juga. Try this way and that.Rupanya the model yang dicadangkan tak sesuai dengan my car system. Actually awal lagi we did not agree But being business. boleh, boleh punya! Patutlah lama! So bila JY sampai semula after prayers, dia suruh tukar model yang lain. Barulah system sesuai dan siap segera. Fine, satisfied. Budak-budak ni patut baca dulu manual. Imagine dari jam 10 pagi sampai 3 petang baru siap. Sambil tu tengoklah orang pasang cermin gelap, pasang car radio, sarung kusyen kereta. Observe macam mana mereka berniaga, bekerja and serve the customers. These boys learn these skills through observation, practise, team work and mulut mahu manis be!Tak pergi kursus pun mereka. The bos pula attracted customers' attention through a speaker(not taped but live) "Offer. offer, murah, murah,.....blah, blah" See, there are other competitors at the same area. And there was one very young boy just observing and helping quietly the experienced ones, school leaver on -the- job training.
Now my car dah ada alarm baru, lebih canggih lagi, ada peningkatanlah! Hope for the best!
Ah Mah : Terima kasih ye, nanti datang lagi, datang lagi (and gave me some more bottled drinking water)
Take care Ah Mah! Terima kasih David and gang (will come again if the alarm not functioning well, David)
Soto anyone?
One fine cold morning.......
JY: nak gi mana breakfast?
Me: Soto Zul, dah lama tak makan soto dia.
So to the food court di sebelahan bangunan arked MARA, Jalan Gambut we went.
Pada saya tak ada yang boleh lawan soto hasil air tangan mereka ini. Mesti singgah punya! Jadi my bench mark! Enak sekali rasanya. Kalau balik Melaka, rindu Soto Zul (awas bukan orangnya ye!)Sup sotonya terasa rempah dan daging ayam bukan di siat-siat tetapi comes in small 'ketul'. Lihat gambar.
Order pula teh tarek.
" Teh tarek kurang manis dua!"
Ustaz Abd.Rahim tuan punya salah sebuah gerai minuman di tempat yang sama gembira tersenyum membawa teh tarek. Lihat tersenyum bersama JY. Ustaz selalu datang berbual dengan kami jika kami kunjung ke sana.
So we had a hearty breakfast, soto and teh tarik, in that fine cold morning. Semoga terus maju, Zul, Non and Ustaz!
Finally,
"Non, siapkan dua bungkus soto , nak sambung makan di rumah!"

Di gerai Zul ada jual menu lain spt nasi lemak, nasi goreng, mee goreng dan lauk pauk. tetapi soto ialah yang specialitynya. Kami pilih soto nasi himpit. Baik punya!

Ada Ummp!
When I'm back in Kuantan, Cg (Cikgu ) Norehan (house on the hill , pic , on the left) will tapau me her famous mee calong. Last evening Norehan invited us , Cg Narimah (Datin, sudah bersara , pic, on the right ) and me for tea (and a tour of her new house) She 's a very good cook. In her younger days, she would be in the kitchen, watching and helping her mother cooked. An (Norehan) served us her trade mark Mee Calong. This is a special dish in the western part of Pahang esp Beserah ,Kuantan( kawasan pantai banyak ikan katakan). and also the coastal part of Terengganu . Mee Calong is served with fish soup. You can choose to have either stick mee (mee batang), mee hoon or kwai tiaw(all these to be must soaked first) yes, totally fish. Together with that will be some stuffed -tauhu with fish meat, fish balls, or if you like boiled sliced keropok lekor home made (mind you) not bought from the market! and there is the home made air lada(chilli sauce)too. An gets her fresh ikan from Tanjung Lumpur, a fishing village in Kuantan. The tasty soup is Norehan`s secret recipe which she had tried and experimented umpteemth times till she gets the perfect taste, ada ummph! Norehan also served us ubi itek and keledek rebus with kelapa parut. Ubi itek ni small in size(mini ubi). For dessert, we had caramel pudding. Well Narimah and me makan sepuas-puasnya(don't need dinner) sampai dapat bekal bawa balik lagi untuk orang di rumah (see pic)
Baik hati sungguh Norehan ni. Thank you An.
Because of her passion for cooking and her spirit semangat to promote Mee Calong, An and her family runs a stall, Mee Calong Beserah ( her kampung is Beserah) @ Dataran Gambut Food Court (across the Public Library) in Kuantan . Her younger brother, Joe, has a Mee Calong stall too @ Beserah. You can find some @ Kampung Tanjung Lumpur. I think no other stalls sells mee calong as tasty as An's. But some people tak suka sebab tak biasa makan, tak suka rasa ikan atau sebab-sebab lain (fishy smell!) Ini bukan promosi Mee Calong An tapi tolong promosi Mee Calong Kuantan makanan special (for supper/dinner) di sini.
Ada Ummph lah!
(P.s. By the way, Norehan and Narimah were my colleague and today we are the best of friends.)

Joget Pahang...
My song, my song JOGET PAHANG!!
Dari Melaka ke negeri Pahang,
singgah di Johor beli berangan.
Saya lah ini daganglah merantau,
mengharap belas orang di sini.
I have been living and staying in Pahang since 1987 (daganglah merantau) . So from Melaka , my home town , I moved to Pahang. Doesn't it sound familiar? Normally when I travel to Kuantan or back home to Melaka, I' ll take the Tangkak-Segamat -Muadzam Shah-Gambang route and vice-versa. That means passing through Johor(but not to beli berangan). There are alternate route , though, but taking the Melaka- Johor- Pahang route makes JOGET PAHANG close to my heart (dekat di hati!)
`Melenggang melenggang si tari lenggang,
Kalau baik hati nanti orang pun sayang'
P.S. Negeri Pahang is still aman sentosa, kaya dengan tumbuh-tumbuhan. Well, the late Tan Sri P.Ramlee can forsee this.
